Staycations and Cheap Retreats

Scottish poet, Alexander Smith, states "A man's real possession is his memory. In nothing else is he rich, in nothing else is he poor." These days our posessions and the essentials of life are costing us ever more, but that doesn't mean we can't afford to spend time with our families. We've collected some ideas on inexpensive getaways and activities to help you make memories to last a lifetime.

  • Ocean City, MD - A mere three hour drive from Southern Maryland, Ocean City this is an age-old destination for many Marylanders. Great beaches, great seafood, miles of expansive boardwalk, rides, games - you name it it's there. Food stops not to miss are Fisher's Caramel Popcorn, Thrasher's Boardwalk Fries, and Dumser's Dairyland. If you're into speed try some of the many go-karts and wheeled adventures at Baja Amusements or Speedworld. While you may not be looking to shop there are extensive outlets in West Ocean City and farther north in Rehoboth, DE (no sales tax), that can save you a few pennies. If you're looking to get away from some of the crowds, don't miss peaceful Assateague Island National Seashore and the wild horses that roam free there.
  • Armed Forces Vacation Club - Military and civilian employees of the Department of Defense may not be taking advantage of a great resource, the Armed Forces Vacation Club (AFVC). AFVC resells unused resort timeshares all around the country at significant discounts - with no ongoing obligation. Their Space-A rentals are 1-week stays at numerous resorts that can go for as cheap as $279 during promotional periods - standard rates are a modest $369.
  • Groupon - Looking for unique activities in the local area at bargain prices? Groupon uses the power of social networking to reduce the cost of products and services in the area (Golf, Salon services, custom cakes, and even whitewater and zipline adventures). Check out and register for free to see opportunities in the area.
  • The Smithsonian - The Washington, D.C. area is a treasure trove of museums covering a plethora of topics from Native American History to Air and Space (all free to visit). If you haven't already, you may want to make the journey a bit longer toward Dulles and the new National Air and Space Museum, Udvar-Hazy Center. This is an enormous 760,000 square foot facility with aircraft from every generation of modern aviation including the B-29, the Concorde, the brand new Joint Strike Fighter, and even the Space Shuttle. Be sure not to miss the observation tower overlooking Dulles Airport and the flight simulators.
